The Skinny On Prenatal Massage in the DC area: Part 2

Ok, onto the massage reviews:

Spa on the Hill

Therapist: Sandy, specializes in prenatal, as well as deep tissue, and Swedish massage. She is a Reiki master and also teaches massage in Falls Church
Years of experience: 14
Side or Stomach?: Stomach (pillow contraption with belly cut out)
First Trimester?: Yes
Induction: Yes

About the Spa:
Spa on the Hill is a rather new (2008) upscale boutique spa located in a renovated townhouse on Capitol Hill. If the address sounds familiar it’s because prior to being SPOTH, a business called Mommy Massage was formerly located in that townhouse.  Staying true to the Mommy Massage roots, Spa On The Hill is the first spa in the area that focuses on pregnant women and offers a number of spa treatments and classes for mothers and parents to be.  I found the atmosphere of this small boutique spa both charming and calming.  Although I mainly corresponded with Kevin, the manager, everyone I spoke with was polite and helpful.  Very unpretentious.

My Massage Experience:
This was my first prenatal massage on my tummy.  The spa uses special cushions that allow you to lay face down. The cushions support your pelvic area and have adjustable cut outs for your belly and breasts.  It felt a little weird at first, but once I got situated, it was glorious.  I went into the spa that day with a very sore lower back and achy hips--my therapist, Sandy, had her work cut out for her.  I like a deep massage, don’t really love the gentle touch, long stroke massage.  Sandy didn’t disappoint.   The massage turned into a bit of a physical therapy session once she reached my hips and lower back.  Turns out the pain in my back was referred pain from my lateral hip rotators and quadratus lomborum.  I won’t lie, it didn’t tickle, but Sandy worked out all of my pain.  I never knew where the pain was coming from, but once she identified it and worked it out I actually walked and slept better.  It was an excellent massage and I also loved the mix of massage oils that they used—very subtle scent but very relaxing.  The warm towel around the neck was also a big hit. I could have laid in that dark lavendar room for hours if I didn’t have a sitter waiting for me at home.  I would go back in a flash. Highly recommended, especially if you want a spa that is focused on the needs of pregnant women.

Sugar House Day Spa
Therapist: Kerry
Years of experience: 12+, specializes in prenatal, reflexology, among others
Side or Stomach?: Stomach (pillow contraption with belly cut out)
First Trimester?: No
Induction: Yes

About the Spa:
Sugar House Day Spa is an upscale boutique spa located in a renovated townhouse in Old Town Alexandria.  In addition to massage, the spa also offers body treatments, skin care therapies, medi-spa, as well as salon services.  To be honest, since prenatal massage is one of many treatments available at Sugar House, I didn’t expect a lot.  I sort of expected to be short changed.  However, I was pleasantly surprised.

My Massage Experience:
Kerry was very experienced and knowledgeable. She made sure I was very comfortable and talked me through the massage and was careful to note where my aches and pains were.  My tension this time was predominantly in my shoulders and upper back.  Kerry worked out all the knots and aches.  It was a deep and firm massage (for as deep as a prenatal massage can be). I also laid on my back for a short time while she did legs, arms and back of neck.  Some women are very leery of laying on their back at all, I’m not, and this was soo worth it.  I slept like a baby after this massage.  The atmosphere was utterly calming and I also liked the gentle aroma of the oil or cream used here.  So even though I occasionally find the people who work at Sugar House pretentious, and even though the manager never got back to me, it was a fantastic massage and I would recommend it.

Cost:    Prenatal Massage  50 min/$90   80 min/$120

Location:

Body, Mind & Sole
Therapist: Julie
Years of Experience: 7+, specializes in prenatal, deep tissue, reflexology
Side or Stomach: Side with pillows
First trimester?: No
Induction?: maybe

About the Spa:
Body, Mind & Sole is located in a non-descript store front in the Del Ray section of Alexandria.  I actually walked right by it the first time I went looking for it.  I also went back onto my computer to check the address and reviews to make sure I was at the right place, since it wasn’t what I expected!  Let me be blunt here BM&S is no-frills compared to the other spas.  It has an earthy and organic feel -- very Del Ray.  When you enter it feels a little more like an office than a spa, but don’t be discouraged, the focus at Body, Mind & Sole is on your body treatment.  It’s a small outfit made up of a handful of therapists who take their work seriously.  If you’ve ever lived overseas – Asia in particular—you might be more familiar with low key neighborhood spas like this that are located in store fronts and don’t offer all the big spa bells and whistles.  The benefit of a small spa like this is that you are definitely an individual here, not just an appointment and you can get a good massage for a decent price.  Also, they include a footbath with each massage - a nice relaxing touch.

My Massage Experience:
From what I could tell, there was one main massage room at B,M& S. The room is relaxing and there is a large mural on the ceiling. I was situated on my side for the massage with pillows for support between my knees.  My shoulders and neck were my main complaint during this massage and Julie definitely focused on those areas.  Julie was knowledgeable and accommodating. I enjoyed the massage although it wasn’t as deep as I like.  I should note that this was my first prenatal massage ever, and my first on my side.  Personally, I don’t like lying on my side for long periods of time–like more than 10 minutes.  So it took me a while to get used to lying this way for my massage.  All in all, I would recommend B,M&S for a solid massage—they also offer preconception and postpartum massages.  I would definitely go for the 60 min or longer massage.  I did the 30 min one and wish I had done the 60.  If you don’t need the all the frills of a big spa, but like personal atmosphere and reasonable prices —check out Body, Mind & Sole.

Cost:*
Prenatal massage  30 min/$50  60 min/$85  75 min/$100   90 min/$120
*all include foot bath
Preconception and postpartum massage also available

Massage Envy
Therapist: Shalita
Years of Experience: 8+, specializes in prenatal, hot stone, deep tissue
Side or Stomach: Side with body pillow
First Trimester: No
Induction: Not technically, but will give later term massages

About the Spa:
Massage Envy is a chain spa with four locations in the DC area.  I was intrigued by Massage Envy because I see and hear about them constantly (they have pretty much saturated the market with advertisements.)  After visiting two upscale boutique spas in the area and one smaller, organic spa, I wanted to see how a chain spa stacked up.  The spa is located in a shopping center in Falls Church, that also houses a supermarket and a pharmacy, among other businesses.  From the outside, it looks like a hair salon.  The waiting room was very clean, bright and new, but it also felt more like a hotel lobby than a spa—at least to me.  Everyone was very professional and polite in the reception area (they were colder and more uppity on the phone).  A spa representative sat down with me and explained the benefits of the massage and asked what areas I wished to focus on.  It sort of felt like hospital triage.  What I realized later was that my representative is a sales person.  She’s sweet and kind and walks you through everything before you go in and then after the massage she goes in for the hard sell.

So here’s the deal – Massage Envy has an introductory $49 massage deal for new customers.  If you decide to come back for another massage it costs $98.  However, if you sign up for their wellness program for $60/month you get 1 massage a month.   However, you really have to be committed to this since it’s very hard to break your contract (like a gym membership).  If you want to cancel your membership you must have a doctor’s note with a medical reason why you can’t continue or you must prove that you are moving more than 25 miles away from a Massage Envy location.

My Massage Experience:
It definitely felt like a hotel spa when I went back. It was peaceful and clean, but it was crowded.  However, there are at least 12 rooms at this location so they can accommodate a number of people.  The massage room itself was also very clean/sterile.  I have to say the massage bed was the coolest of the four in that it mechanically raised and lowered and was heated!  I really liked the heated bed! I received my massage while situated on my side while holding a body pillow.  Shalita was nice, knowledgeable, but very cautious.  I got the feeling that they are trained by ME to really err on the side of caution when giving a prenatal massage.  They don’t do first trimester massage, don’t massage feet, and are super cautious with the amount of pressure.  The massage was not deep,  Shalita did a lot of long, medium pressure strokes.  I have had massages like this before—I don’t really enjoy soft strokes.  When my body aches I don’t want my therapist to be gentle.  Also, they use a cream instead of scented oil.  It was ok, but I prefer oil.  They are definitely trying to appeal to the masses. Overall it was a decent massage, but I wouldn’t pay $98 for another.

Cost: First time customers: 60 min/$49   Returning: 60 min/$98
Wellness membership: $60/month includes 1 massage per month.  Very difficult to cancel.  Must have explicit note from doctor or must move more than 25 miles from a massage envy

If you want a spa that really focuses on pregnant women and offers and excellent prenatal services: Spa on the Hill

If you are looking for a solid, affordable massage and don’t require the bells and whistles of the bigger spas:  Body, Mind & Sole

If you are looking to have multiple massages during hour pregnancy and can’t spend $90 everytime supplement with a shorter massage at: Body, Mind & Sole

If you are new to massage completely: Spa on the Hill or Sugar House

If you are super anal and need a place that is new and clean and sterile: Massage Envy

If you want to get other spa or salon services done during the same visit: Sugar House

The Skinny on Prenatal Massage: Part 1

After coming across multiple inquires about prenatal massage by women in the area on some of the larger baby sites (Baby Center & Lilaguide), I decided someone (me) needed to research prenatal massage and, eh hem, try out a couple of spas in the area.  Although I would have loved to have tried every spa in the area, my time and resources were pretty limited; so I decided to try out four spas:  1 upscale spa in DC that focuses primarily on prenatal massage (Spa on the Hill), 1 upscale spa in VA (Sugar House Day Spa), 1 no frills/holistic spa (Body, Mind & Sole), and 1 chain spa (Massage Envy).

Before I review the spas I visited here’s some background on prenatal massage.

Benefits of prenatal massage
According to the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals’ consumer education service, there are numerous benefits to massage during pregnancy.  Not only does it feel amazing on an expanding and aching body, but it can relieve muscular tension, reduce stress on weight bearing joints, stimulate blood flow, increase flexibility, alleviate leg cramps and, well, generally help you feel AND sleep better.

Why won’t some spas do prenatal massage during the first trimester?
Well according to some of the therapists I spoke with, the body views the fetus as a foreign object during the first trimester and since massage is aimed at eliminating and releasing toxins from the body, some spas feel that it’s best to avoid massage while the body and fetus are in that sensitive state.

How is my body situated during a prenatal massage?
Depending on the spa you will either lay on your side or on your tummy with the help of a tummy cut out.  I have to say, I am partial to the tummy cut out, I loved being able to lay on my tummy!!  If you are partial to one way or the other, make sure you ask them before you book your massage.

Does my massage therapist have to be certified in prenatal massage?
Um, yeah.  It’s very important that the person giving the massage is not just a licensed massage therapist, but that he or she is certified in prenatal massage.  There are pressure points and areas of the body prenatal therapist are trained to avoid due to how it may impact the baby.  They alter their technique and pressure to ensure the safety of mom and baby.

Is it safe for all pregnant women to get a prenatal massage?
Answers vary on this one but I am going to err on the side of caution and say no.  Most ob/gyns won’t clear high risk pregnancies for massage—just too risky.  So talk to your ob/gyn before booking your massage.

There seem to be a lot of places in the area that offer prenatal massage, how do I choose a spa?
Well, first, what’s your budget?  If cost is your main concern, your options will be narrowed down pretty quickly.  Also, think about the type of spa and atmosphere you’re looking for.  Do you want a place that specializes in prenatal massage or a place that offers prenatal massage among other offerings? Do you require a unique boutique spa experience, a big name spa, or could you care less what the place is like inside as long as the massage is good?

Yummy/Yucky Pregnancy Side Effect #4: Skin Changes

Yummy
The pregnancy glow.  Increased blood flow and increased secretions of the oil glands give many women a rosy/waxy sheen during the first trimester.  You may not notice it, but others do.
Yucky
Every other skin side effect.  If you’re lucky you’ll only experience a few of these.  If you get hit with all, sorry about that!
Prego Mask
Red Palms
Spider Veins
Skin Tags
Linea Nigra
Seriously, these are too depressing for me to review.  So I’ll let Dr. Sears do it for me http://www.askdrsears.com/html/11/T011309.asp
But in the interest of full disclosure, I developed no less than four (4) of these during my first pregnancy: prego glow, spider veins in one leg, skin tags (yuck), and linea nigra.
Some other fun skin changes:
Armpit Lumps
Ok that's not the medical term, but I don't know what they're really called.  I developed a whole bunch of lumps under my left armpit last pregnancy and they’ve made an appearance again this pregnancy--it’s like a BMX bike park under there.  Mine were innocuous but if you develop them show your doctor in case it is something more serious.  My doctor told me it was excess breast tissue.  Good news is they go away. Bad news is that they get bigger before they get smaller and go away!
PUPPS
Some women get a horribly itchy belly rash called PUPPS (Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy ).  It's harmless to mother and baby, but its annoying and terribly itchy.  It usually only effects women during their first pregnancy, but my friend was lucky enough to get it with #2.  Bad news is it might last until you deliver.  Interestingly enough studies have shown that 70% of women who get PUPPS during pregnancy give birth to a boy.
Moles/Freckles
Also, watch out for changes in existing moles/freckles.  Your skin goes through rapid changes during pregnancy and some women’s moles may get larger or become dysplastic nevi (atypical) that could become cancerous.  Melanoma is the second most common cancer in women aged 20-29.  If you notice changes in your moles see a dermatologist immediately.  A biopsy can be done safely at any stage of pregnancy.

The Skinny On: Diapers

Ok so any way you cut it, you’re going to spend a lot on diapers over the next few years. Might as well get over the sticker shock now.  Consumer Reports estimates that you’ll spend between $1,500 and $2,000 by the time your child is diaper free; more if you go with the organic/eco friendly diapers that are biodegradable and chlorine free.  However, there are ways to save if you take some time to look around and compare.  Since most of you are working and probably don’t have that kind of time, I did the leg work for you and made a diaper comparison chart for 9 diaper vendors (3 wholesale clubs, 2 baby superstores, 2 discount stores and 2 online stores.)  I compared only the most popular diapers (Pampers, Huggies, Luvs).  I tried to compare apples to apples as often as I could, but you know how hard the companies make it to do this.  I highlighted the best priced diaper in each category.
The diaper comp chart is at the end of this article.

What size should I buy? How many should I start out with?
Most baby sites recommend only buying a small pack (50) of the Newborn size diapers since they usually only go up to 10lbs and size 1 diapers start at 8lbs.  So, if you know your baby is going to weigh in over 8lbs, you might not even want to bother buying the newborn size!

Diaper Sizing
Pampers Sizing
Huggies Sizing
Luvs Sizing

N   Up to 10lb
N Up to 10lbs

N Up to 10lbs
1     8-14 lbs
1   8-14bs

1  8-14lbs
1-2 Up to 15lbs
2  12-18lbs

2  12-18lbs
2    12-18 lbs
3  16-28 lbs
3  16-28lbs
2-3 14-22 lbs

Should I stock up on size 1 before the baby is born?
Probably not.  You might want to start out with a small pack of sensitive size 1  diapers and small pack of regular size 1 diapers.  I needed to use Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive on Sophie for the first few months because her skin was too sensitive for the regular scented ones.  (I also loved the little pee pee line on the diaper that indicated when the baby was wet.) So see what works on your baby and then stock up.  If you really want to have a big supply ready then buy a big box of Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive, Huggies Pure & Natural, or Seventh Generation.  They are all made for sensitive skin and should work.

How many diapers will we go through a day?
Your little munchkin will go through 10-12 diapers a day for the first month or so.  As the baby grows and can go longer between feedings you usually move down to about 8-10 a day, then about 6 by the time the baby is 1.  Those are just ballpark figures though - every baby is different.

Why does each brand offer so many damn types of diapers?
Because we are suckers.  Diaper companies know we obsess over this stuff and by making little changes here and there they can get us to spend more.  Ok, that’s just my opinion.

So Pampers and Huggies have their premium line for newborns that go from size N to 3.  Pampers line is called Swaddlers New Baby and Huggies is called Little Snugglers. Within that they have regular scented and non-scented sensitive diapers.  Then the next step down are the Pampers Baby Dry and Huggies Snug & Dry.  Luvs keep it simple and offer one type of diaper.  Once the babies are into size 3 diapers, Pampers Swaddlers are replaced by Cruisers and Huggies Little Snugglers are replaced by Little Movers. You jive?

Is one type of diaper better for girls/boys?
Crazy as it may seem there are many people that swear by Pampers for girls and Huggies for boys.  I don’t know if there is research on this, but on most of the baby forums women post this.  Consumer Reports even makes mention of it.  Evidently Pampers leak more on boys.  Is it true? you’ll have to try for yourself.  I have a girl and I do love Pampers—hated the Huggies.  But that’s just me.

What is the issue with Pampers new “Dry Max” technology?
So a few months ago Pampers introduced Swaddlers and Cruisers with new “dry max” technology.  It’s not a whole new line - it’s supposed to be a better version of their current diapers. The dry max diapers utilize the same absorbent gel as the older diapers but the diapers are 20% thinner because the gel is embedded on the diaper instead of being poured into the bulky padding (Webmd).  I have not had any problems and have not heard any complaints from my friends yet, however there are thousands of mothers who claim the diaper caused their baby to break out in a severe diaper rash – some said it was like a chemical burn.  I’m not saying you should avoid Pampers, just wanted to let you know the issue.

Is it better to purchase diapers at the store or online?

Wholesale Clubs
Well if you have the time to do the shopping then buying in bulk from a wholesale club, like BJs, is very cost effective.  I say BJs because they definitely have the largest and best priced selection in Northern VA.  Costco’s selection was awful.  However, you have to decide if it’s cost effective for you to join a wholesale club.  Annual fees range from $35-$50 so if you are just buying diapers there – it might not be cost effective.  I get my diapers, wipes, formula, coffee, paper products, etc there so it works out for me.  The wholesale clubs also offer $3-$5 off diaper coupons every few months.

Babies R Us & Buy Buy Baby
I really don’t like buying my diapers here. They don’t have the best prices and they only occasionally have coupons that make it worthwhile.

Target & Walmart
Target and Walmart also have good prices, but the Target’s in our area had a larger selection.  Target’s diapers also go on sale and they occasionally have coupons.

Diapers.com & Amazon.com
If you’re working and totally pinched for time, it’s probably easier and more cost effective for you to order online.  Diapers.com and Amazon.com deliver to your door and you can set up an automatic delivery schedule.  Very convenient.  Diapers.com often has an offer going on and has free delivery on orders over $49 (so just order your wipes and diapers together).  I’ve found that the prices and selection on Amazon are not as stable as Diapers.com, however if you subscribe you save 15% on your orders and get free delivery—which would make their prices comparable to BJs.

Supermarkets/Convenience Stores
While both put diapers on sale from time to time, the packages are very small and usually don’t compare to the savings you get at the discount and wholesale stores.  I saw a woman buying a bunch of diapers and formula at the Teeter a few months ago and I desperately wanted to throw myself in front of her cart and tell her not to do it.  Only buy diapers and formula at the supermarket if you are in a pinch or if they go on great sale—otherwise you are wasting your money.  You’ll pay a lot more

It's Cool To Pee Your Pants

I'm torn between thinking these are the most awful things I have ever seen and thinking they're kind of cute/funny and have some baby comedic value.  Supposedly they are the latest rage in baby fashion

After reading that they were introduced in Israel in 2007 (and have been a huge hit there and in 20 other countries) I can't stop picturing Adam Sandler in "Don't Mess With The Zohan".

You can get them at Target, Babies R Us, Diapers.com among other locations.  They run about $23 for 72
